What is Internet Propagation?

What Is DNS Propagation and How Long Does It Take?

Overview

When you update the DNS settings for your domain, those changes may not appear everywhere immediately. The time it takes for updated DNS information to refresh across different internet providers and DNS services is commonly called DNS propagation or internet propagation.

During propagation, some visitors may see your updated website or email configuration while others may temporarily see the previous setup. Most DNS changes begin appearing within minutes or a few hours, but some changes can take up to 24–48 hours to fully update.

This guide explains what DNS propagation is, why it takes time, how long it can last, and what you may experience while your domain changes are updating.

What Is DNS Propagation?

DNS stands for Domain Name System. DNS connects your domain name to services such as your PhotoBiz website, email provider, and other online services.

When you change your DNS settings, some DNS servers and internet providers may continue using previously stored information until that information refreshes. Because these systems update at different times, a DNS change may appear in one location before it appears somewhere else.

DNS propagation can occur after changes such as:

  • Changing your domain nameservers
  • Adding or changing A records
  • Adding or changing CNAME records
  • Adding or changing MX records
  • Adding or changing TXT records
  • Updating SPF, DKIM, or DMARC information
  • Making other DNS changes for your domain

Why Does DNS Propagation Take Time?

DNS services temporarily store domain information in a process called caching. Caching helps websites and other online services load efficiently without requesting new DNS information every time someone visits a domain.

DNS records also include a setting called TTL, or Time To Live. TTL helps determine how long DNS information may be cached before it is checked again.

Because different DNS providers and internet service providers may refresh their cached information at different times, DNS changes do not always become visible everywhere at the same moment.

How Long Does DNS Propagation Take?

Many DNS changes begin working within a few minutes or several hours. However, you should allow up to 24–48 hours for DNS changes to fully update.

Nameserver changes may take longer than individual DNS record changes and are one of the situations where allowing the full 24–48 hours is especially important.

The exact amount of time can vary depending on:

  • The type of DNS change
  • The previous DNS settings
  • DNS caching
  • The TTL value
  • The DNS provider
  • The internet service provider being used

What You May Experience During DNS Propagation

During DNS propagation, you and your visitors may temporarily see different results.

For example, you may see your new PhotoBiz website while someone in another location still sees the previous website. One internet connection may show the updated site while another still uses older DNS information.

If email-related DNS records were changed, email routing may also behave differently while the updated records are refreshing.

These differences do not necessarily mean there is a problem with your DNS configuration. Different networks may simply be using DNS information that has not refreshed yet.

DNS Propagation vs. Browser Caching

DNS propagation and browser caching are separate processes.

DNS propagation relates to how your domain's DNS information is being resolved across the internet. Browser caching happens when your browser or device stores previously loaded website information.

If your DNS records have updated but you still see an older version of your website, your browser, device, router, or internet provider may still be using cached information.

You can try:

  • Opening your website in a private or incognito browser window
  • Viewing the website in a different browser
  • Checking the website on another device
  • Connecting through a different internet connection

These steps can help determine whether you are seeing a caching issue instead of an active DNS propagation delay.

What to Do While DNS Changes Are Propagating

Once the correct DNS records have been entered, propagation normally completes automatically.

Avoid repeatedly changing or re-entering DNS records simply because the update is not visible immediately. Additional changes can make troubleshooting more difficult because each new change may also need time to propagate.

If you believe a DNS record was entered incorrectly, verify the record before making additional changes.

Keep in mind that propagation will not correct an incorrect or missing DNS record. If your website, email, or another domain service is still not working after allowing sufficient time, the DNS configuration may need to be reviewed.

Helpful Notes

  • DNS propagation is also commonly called internet propagation.
  • Most DNS changes begin appearing before the full 24–48 hour window.
  • Nameserver changes may take longer than individual DNS record changes.
  • Different DNS records may begin working at different times.
  • Email-related DNS changes can temporarily affect email routing while records refresh.
  • DNS propagation and browser caching are not the same thing.
  • Waiting for propagation will not correct an incorrect or missing DNS record.
  • Avoid making unnecessary DNS changes while propagation is taking place.
