Why Isn’t My Photography Website Showing Up on Google?

Overview

If your photography website is not appearing in Google search results, it does not necessarily mean something is wrong with your website. First, determine whether Google has indexed your website or whether your pages are indexed but not ranking for the searches you expect.

PhotoBiz provides built-in SEO tools that help search engines discover and understand your website, including customizable metadata, an XML sitemap, Schema markup, image alt text tools, and Google Search Console verification support.

This guide walks you through checking your indexing status, troubleshooting important pages with Google Search Console, reviewing your PhotoBiz SEO and content, and promoting your website while your organic search visibility develops.

STEP ONE

Check whether Google has indexed your website.

Open Google and search for site:yourdomain.com, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain name. For example, if your website is examplephotography.com, search for site:examplephotography.com.

If pages from your website appear, Google has indexed at least part of your site. If no pages appear, your website may not have been indexed yet. The site: search is a useful first check, but Google Search Console provides more detailed information about the indexing status of individual pages.

If your website is indexed but does not appear when you search for terms such as your photography specialty and city, continue through this guide. In that situation, you may be dealing with a ranking issue rather than an indexing issue.

STEP TWO

Verify your website in Google Search Console.

Google Search Console is a free Google tool that lets you review how Google discovers, crawls, and indexes your website. Verification does not cause Google to index your website. It gives you access to Google's indexing reports and troubleshooting tools for your domain.

If your domain's DNS is managed by PhotoBiz, you can verify a Domain property by adding Google's TXT verification record to your PhotoBiz DNS settings.

See How to Verify Your Domain with Google Search Console Using PhotoBiz DNS Tools for complete instructions.

After verification is complete, you can use the PAGE INDEXING report to review which URLs Google has indexed and which URLs are currently not indexed.

STEP THREE

Inspect an important page with Google Search Console.

Open Google Search Console and use URL INSPECTION to inspect the full URL of a page you expect to appear in search results. Start with your homepage or another important page such as a primary service, portfolio, or location page.

Google will show whether the URL is currently indexed and provide additional information about how it sees the page. If the page is not indexed, review the reason shown before making changes. Some non-indexed URLs are normal, including redirects, duplicate URLs, and alternate URLs where Google has selected another canonical version.

If the page is eligible for indexing and you recently created or updated it, you may use REQUEST INDEXING to ask Google to recrawl the URL. Requesting indexing does not guarantee that Google will add the page to its index.

STEP FOUR

Review the SEO settings for the page in PhotoBiz.

Log in to your PhotoBiz account and click WEBSITE in the left-side menu. Open the page you are troubleshooting, then click SEO in the top-right corner of the Website Builder.

Review the page's metadata and make sure it accurately describes the visible content on the page. You can use Auto metadata, enter Custom metadata, or click ASK PHOTOBIZ AI to generate page-specific suggestions based on your website content and Business Profile.

Focus on a clear Meta Title and Meta Description that accurately identify the photography service, subject, or location covered by the page. If you make changes, review the information and click SAVE CHANGES. The Save button automatically applies the update to your website. There is no separate publish button.

See How to Customize SEO for Your PhotoBiz Website Pages for complete instructions.

STEP FIVE

Review the content on the page.

Google uses the visible content of a page to understand what the page is about and when it may be relevant to someone searching. A page with very little written content, duplicated wording, or unclear information about your services may have difficulty competing in search results even when it is indexed.

Make sure the page clearly explains the photography service you provide, the areas you serve when location is relevant, and information that is useful to a potential client. Write naturally and make the content specific to that page instead of repeating the same wording across multiple pages.

You can add or improve written content using Text Editor Blocks. You can also use ASK PHOTOBIZ AI to help create page content based on your business and services.

See How to Use Text Editor Blocks for additional instructions.

FINAL STEP

Allow Google time to process your website and any changes you make.

After you create a page or update its content, metadata, or other SEO information, Google must crawl the page again before its index and search results can reflect those changes. This can take several days or longer, and new websites may require additional time before they begin gaining search visibility.

Use Google Search Console to monitor important pages instead of repeatedly submitting the same URL for indexing. Once an important page is indexed, remember that indexing makes the page eligible to appear in Google Search. It does not guarantee a specific ranking or position for a search term.

Is Your Website Indexed but Not Ranking?

Being indexed and ranking are two different parts of search visibility.

Indexing means Google has processed a page and added it to its search index. An indexed page is eligible to appear in search results.

Ranking determines where an indexed page appears for a particular search. Your website may be indexed correctly but still appear below competing websites for searches such as:

  • Wedding photographer in Greensboro NC
  • Newborn photographer near me
  • Charlotte family photographer
  • Professional headshot photographer

Search rankings depend on many factors, including the relevance and usefulness of your content, the search itself, competition, location, website authority, and other signals evaluated by Google.

A website that does not rank on the first page for a competitive search term is not necessarily experiencing an indexing problem.

Common Reasons a Page May Not Be Indexed

Google Search Console may report a page as not indexed for many reasons. Not every status indicates a problem.

Common examples include:

  • Crawled - currently not indexed: Google crawled the page but has not chosen to index it at this time.
  • Discovered - currently not indexed: Google knows the URL exists but has not crawled it yet.
  • Alternate or duplicate page: Google may have selected another URL as the canonical version.
  • Page with redirect: Google generally evaluates the destination URL instead of indexing the redirecting URL.
  • Not Found (404): The URL no longer points to an active page.
  • Blocked by noindex: The page contains an instruction telling search engines not to index it.
  • Disabled PhotoBiz page: A disabled page is not publicly accessible, so search engines cannot index it.

For a detailed explanation of these messages and when you need to take action, see Understanding Google Search Console Page Indexing Messages.

Your PhotoBiz XML Sitemap

PhotoBiz automatically generates an XML sitemap for your Website Package. The sitemap helps search engines discover the pages available on your website and updates as your website changes.

You can submit your sitemap through Google Search Console to help Google discover your website URLs and monitor sitemap processing. Submitting a sitemap does not guarantee that every URL will be indexed.

See How to Submit Your Website Sitemap to Google Search Console for complete instructions.

Schema Markup in PhotoBiz

PhotoBiz includes a dedicated Schema section inside the Website Builder's SEO settings.

Schema markup is structured data that gives search engines additional context about information on a page, such as your business, services, location, products, events, or FAQs. You can click ASK PHOTOBIZ AI to generate Schema markup based on your page content and Business Profile, or advanced users can add valid Schema markup manually.

Schema can help search engines better understand your website, but adding Schema does not guarantee indexing, higher rankings, rich results, or other enhanced search features.

See How to Add Schema Markup to Your PhotoBiz Website for complete instructions.

PhotoBiz SEO Tools

Your PhotoBiz Website Package includes tools designed to give search engines access to important information about your website, including:

  • Auto and Custom page metadata
  • Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions
  • Search Engine Preview
  • Friendly URLs
  • XML sitemap
  • Schema markup
  • ASK PHOTOBIZ AI for metadata and Schema suggestions
  • Image alt text tools
  • Mobile-responsive website design
  • HTTPS security
  • Google Search Console verification support
  • Automatically managed canonical tags for Website Builder pages

These tools provide the technical foundation for making your website accessible and understandable to search engines. Search engines ultimately decide which pages to crawl, index, and display for individual searches.

Promote Your Website While Building Search Visibility

SEO can take time, especially for a new website or newly published content. You do not have to rely on Google as your only source of website traffic while your organic search visibility develops.

Creating useful blog posts gives you new content to share with potential and past clients. You can use the PhotoBiz AI Blog Post Creator to publish helpful content about recent sessions, photography tips, locations, services, promotions, and other topics relevant to your audience.

After publishing a blog post, you can use PROMOTE THIS BLOG POST to create an email marketing campaign from your blog content. The campaign can include links and calls-to-action that encourage your contacts to visit the blog post on your website.

You can also share your website pages and blog posts through your social media channels to help more people discover your content.

Email marketing and social media promotion can increase website visits, keep your audience engaged, and build awareness of your business. These activities do not guarantee higher Google rankings, but they give you additional ways to attract visitors while your organic search presence develops.

Additional Helpful Notes

  • Paid advertising does not directly improve your organic Google rankings.
  • Do not repeatedly add the same keywords throughout a page in an attempt to rank higher. Write naturally for potential clients.
  • Avoid changing an established Friendly URL solely for SEO purposes. Changing a URL can affect existing links, bookmarks, and indexed URLs.
  • Not every URL listed as Not indexed in Google Search Console needs to be fixed.
  • Focus first on your homepage, primary service pages, portfolio pages, location pages, About page, and Contact page.
  • If Google selects a different canonical URL for a duplicate or alternate version of a page, this can be normal.
  • PhotoBiz is not affiliated with Google. PhotoBiz Support can help with PhotoBiz website settings, DNS verification, and related setup. Google controls how and when pages are crawled, indexed, and ranked.
