Overview
Your domain’s name servers determine where your DNS records are managed. DNS records control important domain settings, including where your website loads, how your email works, and how third-party services connect to your domain.
For PhotoBiz domains, DNS may be managed through PhotoBiz AWS Route 53, PhotoBiz legacy Rackspace name servers, or a third-party DNS provider. AWS Route 53 is the current and preferred PhotoBiz DNS platform because it allows you to manage supported DNS records directly inside your PhotoBiz account.
This guide explains how to check your domain’s current name servers and understand your next step based on where your DNS is managed.
Open the ICANN Lookup website at https://lookup.icann.org/en/lookup.
Enter your domain name in the search field, then complete the lookup. Enter only the domain name, such as yourdomain.com. Do not include https:// or www.
In the lookup results, locate the section labeled Name Servers.
This section shows the name servers currently assigned to your domain. These name servers determine where your DNS records are managed.
If your name servers show ns.rackspace.com and ns2.rackspace.com, your domain is using PhotoBiz legacy Rackspace name servers.
PhotoBiz recommends upgrading from Rackspace to AWS Route 53 when available. AWS Route 53 allows you to add, edit, and manage supported DNS records directly inside your PhotoBiz account without waiting for the PhotoBiz Support Team to make those updates for you.
To upgrade, log in to your PhotoBiz account and click DOMAINS in the left-side menu. From there, you can upgrade your DNS settings to AWS Route 53. PhotoBiz will provide four unique AWS name servers that must be updated wherever your domain is registered.
If you prefer to keep your domain on Rackspace name servers, you will need to submit a support ticket any time DNS records need to be added, edited, or removed. Include the full DNS record details in your request so the PhotoBiz Support Team can update the records for you.
If you have not upgraded your name servers yet, see How to Upgrade Your Domain Name Servers.
If your name servers show the four AWSDNS name servers provided in your PhotoBiz account, your domain is already using PhotoBiz DNS through AWS Route 53.
No name server upgrade is needed. You can manage supported DNS records from the DOMAINS section of your PhotoBiz account.
For step-by-step instructions, see How to Manage Your Domain’s DNS Records in PhotoBiz.
If your name servers show values other than PhotoBiz AWS Route 53 name servers or PhotoBiz legacy Rackspace name servers, your DNS is currently managed through a third-party provider.
You can continue managing DNS records through your current DNS provider, or you can update your domain’s name servers to PhotoBiz AWS Route 53.
If you keep your third-party name servers, DNS record updates must be made through that provider. This may include A records, CNAME records, MX records, TXT records, SPF records, or third-party verification records.
If you update your name servers to PhotoBiz AWS Route 53, DNS management will move to PhotoBiz after propagation is complete. Once the new name servers have propagated, you can manage supported DNS records directly inside your PhotoBiz account from the DOMAINS section.
Once you have reviewed your name servers, you should know where your DNS is managed and what action to take next.
If your domain is using PhotoBiz AWS Route 53 name servers, you can manage supported DNS records in your PhotoBiz account. If your domain is using PhotoBiz legacy Rackspace name servers, you can upgrade to AWS Route 53 for self-service DNS management or submit a support ticket for DNS record updates. If your domain is using third-party name servers, you can manage DNS through that provider or update your name servers to PhotoBiz AWS Route 53.
Name server changes and DNS record updates may take time to update across the internet. Many changes begin working within a few minutes, but full DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours.
Changing name servers affects where your DNS is managed. Before changing name servers, make sure any important existing DNS records are accounted for. This is especially important for email records, third-party tools, domain verification records, and any connected services using your domain.
If your domain is registered through PhotoBiz and using AWS Route 53 name servers, you can manage supported DNS records from the DOMAINS section of your PhotoBiz account.
If your domain is registered somewhere else but using the AWS Route 53 name servers provided in your PhotoBiz account, your DNS may still be managed through PhotoBiz. However, name server changes must be made through the company where your domain is registered.
If your domain uses third-party name servers, PhotoBiz Support can help you identify where your DNS appears to be managed. DNS record changes must be completed through that third-party provider unless you move your name servers to PhotoBiz AWS Route 53.
What are name servers?
Name servers tell the internet where your domain’s DNS records are managed. They do not always mean your domain is registered with that same company.
What is DNS?
DNS stands for Domain Name System. DNS connects your domain name to services such as your website, email, and third-party tools.
What if my domain is still using Rackspace name servers?
Rackspace name servers are PhotoBiz legacy name servers. You can keep them, but DNS updates must be submitted to the PhotoBiz Support Team by support ticket.
For easier self-service DNS management, upgrade your domain to PhotoBiz AWS Route 53 name servers when available.
What if my domain is already using AWS name servers?
If your domain is using the four AWSDNS name servers provided in your PhotoBiz account, you can manage supported DNS records directly inside your PhotoBiz account.
What if my name servers are with another company?
If your name servers are with another company, your DNS is managed through that provider. You can either continue making DNS updates there or update your name servers to PhotoBiz AWS Route 53 so you can manage DNS through your PhotoBiz account after propagation is complete.
What if ICANN does not show my name servers?
Some domains may have privacy or registry limitations that affect what appears in ICANN Lookup. If you cannot find your name servers through ICANN, check with the company where your domain is registered.
