How to Edit the URL Slug (Friendly URL) for a Page on Your PhotoBiz Website

Overview

Every page on your PhotoBiz website has a URL slug, also called a Friendly URL. This is the last part of the web address that appears after your domain name. For example, in https://yourdomain.com/wedding-photography, the wedding-photography portion is the URL slug.

By default, PhotoBiz automatically creates a URL slug based on the page's name in your website navigation. If multiple pages have the same name, PhotoBiz adds a number to keep each URL unique.

You can customize your Friendly URL to create a shorter, more descriptive web address that's easy for visitors to read, remember, and share. This guide walks you through updating a page's Friendly URL using the PhotoBiz Website Builder.

Important: Changing an existing page's Friendly URL does not automatically create a 301 redirect from the previous address. If your page is already live, consider setting up a 301 redirect so visitors and search engines can still reach it using the old URL.

STEP ONE

Log into your PhotoBiz account and click WEBSITE in the left-side menu.

This opens your PhotoBiz Website Builder.

STEP TWO

In your Website Builder, click the page where you want to customize the URL slug.

The selected page will open in the editor. You'll see its current URL directly beneath the page name.

STEP THREE

Click SEO in the upper-right corner of the page editor.

This opens the SEO panel on the right side of your screen, displaying the METAS settings by default.

STEP FOUR

In the SEO panel, click FRIENDLY URL in the left-side menu.

This opens the Friendly URL settings, where you can view the page's current web address and customize its URL slug.

STEP FIVE

In the FRIENDLY URL settings, click the dropdown menu and select CUSTOM instead of AUTO.

Enter the URL slug you want to use for your page.

For example, enter wedding-photography-greensboro to create a web address such as:

https://yourdomain.com/wedding-photography-greensboro

You can separate words using hyphens or spaces. PhotoBiz automatically replaces spaces with hyphens when you save your changes. If you enter hyphens yourself, PhotoBiz keeps them without adding extra hyphens.

FINAL STEP

Click SAVE CHANGES to save your custom Friendly URL.

PhotoBiz will update your page's web address using the URL slug you entered.

Open the updated URL in a new browser tab to confirm that the page loads correctly.

What Your Visitors See

Your Friendly URL determines the web address visitors use to access a specific page on your website.

For example, your page might originally use:

https://yourdomain.com/wedding

After customizing the Friendly URL, visitors can access the same page using:

https://yourdomain.com/wedding-photography-greensboro

Changing the Friendly URL does not change the page's name in your website navigation. You can keep a short menu label, such as Wedding, while using a more descriptive URL.

Important: If you change an existing page's URL without creating a redirect, visitors using the previous address may encounter a broken link. This includes people following old bookmarks, emails, social media posts, or search engine results.

Helpful Notes About Friendly URLs

AUTO vs. CUSTOM

PhotoBiz provides two options for your page's Friendly URL:

  • AUTO: Automatically generates the URL slug based on the page's navigation name.

  • CUSTOM: Allows you to enter your own URL slug without changing the page's navigation name.

If you switch from CUSTOM back to AUTO, PhotoBiz will generate the URL slug using the page's current navigation name. Click SAVE CHANGES to apply the update.

Remember that switching back to AUTO may also change an existing URL, so check whether a 301 redirect is needed.

Duplicate Friendly URLs

Each website page needs a unique URL. If you enter a custom Friendly URL that's already being used by another page, PhotoBiz automatically adds a number to keep the URL unique.

Spaces and Hyphens

You can type words with spaces or manually separate them with hyphens. When you click SAVE CHANGES, PhotoBiz automatically replaces spaces with hyphens while preserving any hyphens you've already entered.

Best Practices for SEO-Friendly URLs

A clear URL slug helps visitors and search engines understand what a page contains.

When creating a custom Friendly URL, follow these recommendations:

  • Keep it short and descriptive. Use words that accurately describe the page's content.

  • Use relevant keywords naturally. For example, family-photography is more descriptive than page-2.

  • Separate words with hyphens. PhotoBiz can automatically format spaces into hyphens when you save.

  • Avoid unnecessary punctuation or special characters. Use simple words that are easy to read and share.

  • Avoid changing established URLs unnecessarily. If a page already receives traffic from search engines or other websites, changing its address may disrupt those links unless a redirect is configured.

A descriptive URL helps communicate your page's purpose, but changing a URL alone does not guarantee higher search engine rankings.

Changing an Existing URL? Consider a 301 Redirect

If you're updating the Friendly URL of a page that's already live, it's important to consider what happens to links pointing to the previous address.

PhotoBiz does not automatically create a 301 redirect when you change a page's Friendly URL.

A 301 redirect permanently forwards visitors and search engines from an old URL to a new one. This helps preserve access to your page when its address changes.

For example:

Previous URL: yourdomain.com/wedding

Updated URL: yourdomain.com/wedding-photography-greensboro

By creating a 301 redirect from the previous address to the updated one, visitors using the old link can still reach your page.

Follow our How to Set Up a 301 Redirect in PhotoBiz guide for instructions.

Helpful Tip: After changing a URL, review any links you've added to your website, email campaigns, social media profiles, QR codes, or other marketing materials. Update them to use the new address whenever possible.
